WHAT'S ON IN TOKYO
Concert: Peter Barakan’s Live Magic
Veteran radio and TV personality Peter Barakan’s Live Magic is a curated roots music festival targeting an older, more laid-back crowd than you find at most rock fests in Japan. Much of the bill consists of acts that have never set foot in Japan. Powerful Cuban songstress Dayme Arocena, for example, is hardly known outside Japan, while I’m With Her is three female Americana singer-songwriters who all worked separately and only recently teamed up as a group. Japan is represented by lefty dancehall rapper Ranking Taxi and Tin Pan, founded by YMO member Haruomi Hosono.Yebisu The Garden Hall, Oct 24-25.Google Map.
Halloween: Kawasaki Halloween Parade
Long before the current rage for all things pumpkin in Japan, Kawasaki’s Halloween Parade was fronting it for western ghouls and goblins in the Far East. These days, the event has expanded far beyond the parade to take in a kids parade, a Star Wars-themed parade featuring giant Star Wars nebuta lantern floats, an awards show and a “high-tension” disco dance party. The question about Halloween in Japan is: Is it really Halloween, or is it cosplay? And, does it matter?Kawasaki station area, Oct 24.Google Map.
