Thirty minutes by car along a mountain road through the deep snow from JR Tazawako Station, the inn lies deep in the mountains, far removed from human habitation. It’s a single rustic building made of wood: Tsurunoyu Onsen’s annex, Yamanoyado. This hot spring, renowned since the Edo Period, retains a hot-spring atmosphere that has remained unchanged for more than three centuries. Its name comes from a tradition that holds that Japanese cranes, or tsuru, used to heal their wounds in its waters.
